Continue a QCBM Backup in the Background

When a manual backup is running, QCBM's progress overlay provides Continue in Background. This closes the foreground progress view without discarding the persistent Backup Set. QCBM's dedicated Backup Continuation Scheduled Task can keep advancing the same saved job through bounded checkpoints.

Use this workflow when you do not want to keep the progress overlay open for a long-running backup.

Start the Backup Normally

  1. Go to Components > QC Backup Manager > Backups.
  2. Create the manual Backup Set with the intended Profile.
  3. Let QCBM start the persistent job and display the progress overlay.
  4. When you are comfortable leaving the foreground view, click Continue in Background.

The button closes the progress overlay; it does not convert the Backup Set into a different backup or create a second job.

What Continues the Job

QCBM installs a Joomla Scheduled Task named QC Backup Manager Backup Continuation. Its normal installer cadence is one minute. The task looks for persistent manual and scheduled jobs in states that can be advanced and runs another bounded worker checkpoint when appropriate.

This is why background continuation is safer than depending on one long-running browser request. The saved job remains the authority between worker calls.

You Can Reopen Progress

The Backups interface exposes the active persistent job and a View Progress action. Reopen it when you want to inspect the current phase, progress percentage, current-file information when available, or the latest saved message.

Do not assume a job failed merely because you closed the overlay or navigated to another administrator page.

Background Continuation Uses the Same Backup Set

QCBM checks for unfinished persistent manual work before starting a new manual job. If an unfinished manual Backup Set already exists, the workflow can return to that saved job rather than blindly creating a duplicate.

Likewise, the continuation task advances the saved job ID. Per-job locking prevents it from racing a browser worker that is already processing the same checkpoint.

Paused Jobs Are Different

A manually paused job is intentionally stopped and is not treated like an ordinary running job. Select Resume when you are ready to continue it.

A postponed job stores a future resume time. The Backup Continuation task can automatically resume that same job once the saved time is due. Pause and Postpone therefore have different meanings even though both stop immediate processing.

If Background Progress Stops

  1. Reopen QCBM and view the active job.
  2. Check whether the job is running, queued, paused, postponed, cancelling, failed, or complete.
  3. Open Joomla Scheduled Tasks and confirm QC Backup Manager Backup Continuation is enabled and running successfully.
  4. Review the latest job/Backup History message.
  5. If the job is paused, use Resume. If it failed, diagnose the recorded failure instead of starting repeated backups.

Know When the Backup Is Finished

Background continuation is complete only when the persistent job reaches its final state. For a usable recovery point, confirm the Backup Set is complete and verified and that its Recovery Package is available.

Optional automatic export happens after local verification. A remote export problem does not erase a successfully completed local Recovery Package.
