Preview High-Impact Rules Before Enabling Them Site-Wide
Broad or powerful QCDR Rules deserve a controlled validation pass before they are Enabled. Private Preview lets you test the exact saved Rule on representative frontend requests while the Rule remains Draft or Disabled and ordinary visitors remain on the normal runtime path.
Use Preview as evidence, not as a substitute for change planning: a single URL cannot prove every menu, audience, schedule, cache, extension region, or custom PHP side effect on the site.
Rules That Deserve Extra Preview Coverage
- Rules scoped to all pages or broad URL wildcards.
- Partial matches against common words/markup or Rules with a high replacement ceiling.
- HTML-attribute or markup changes that can affect layout, links, forms, or client-side behavior.
- Max Rules that allow processing in protected script/style/code-like areas.
- Rules with Stop Processing that can prevent later Rules from running after a successful replacement.
- Rules using dynamic Joomla data or PHP Tokens.
- Rules with broad audience, IP, schedule, or technical-condition combinations.
Keep the Rule Non-Live While You Build Evidence
- Save the Rule as Draft or Disabled.
- Start with the narrowest representative frontend URL.
- Launch Preview and confirm every request-targeting health row.
- Inspect the actual transformed page, not only the Rule Health pass/fail labels.
- Review Search text counts, replacement counts, change snippets, Token readiness, protected-area information, and any Discovery drift warning.
- Repeat on representative URLs/menu items/component or module regions that the final Rule will cover.
- Repeat with the relevant frontend audience/context when audience, user data, schedule, IP, or technical conditions matter.
Treat PHP Preview as Real Code Execution
Preview isolation protects ordinary visitors from the Rule state change; it does not sandbox a PHP Token. When a previewed Rule reaches a real PHP-backed match, the PHP can execute and perform its own database writes, network calls, emails, or other side effects. Use staging or deliberately non-destructive PHP for high-impact tests.
Check What Preview Cannot Prove Alone
The Preview response itself is private/no-store/no-cache and noindex. After enabling a production Rule, public cache/CDN behavior may differ from the private diagnostic request. Also verify normal cached/public responses, multiple templates or responsive layouts, and other representative routes if those factors can change the rendered target.
Prepare a Fast Rollback
- Know which Rule you will Disable if the result is wrong.
- Keep the original target/replacement values recorded in internal notes when useful.
- For PHP, protected-area, or broad markup changes, take a site/database backup appropriate to the possible side effects.
- Avoid combining several high-impact Rule changes into one unobserved deployment.
Enable Only After the Saved Rule Is the Tested Rule
If you make a final editor change after the last Preview, save and preview again. Preview tests stored state; an unsaved adjustment has not been validated. When satisfied, change the Rule to Enabled and perform a normal frontend verification without preview parameters.
