Use the Same QCDR Token Directly in Content or as a Rule Replacement

A QCDR Token is one reusable object, not two modes. The same saved Token can resolve from a literal placeholder in eligible frontend output or serve as the linked replacement value for one or more Rules.

That lets you centralize a value—such as a phone number, campaign message, image, or link—while choosing different ways to place it on the site.

Use a Token Directly in Content

  1. Create and save the Token, for example {site.support_phone}.
  2. Type that exact placeholder into content that will appear as visible eligible frontend rendered output.
  3. Enable the Token and Token Live Processing.
  4. Load a qualifying frontend page and verify the placeholder resolves.

Standalone Token scanning deliberately skips HTML tags/attributes and protected script, style, code, form, and comment-like regions. Use a Rule when the target is a technical rendered fragment rather than visible content.

Use the Same Token from a Rule

  1. Open or create the Rule that finds the old rendered value.
  2. Under Replacement source, choose Use a QCDR token.
  3. Select the existing Token.
  4. Save the Rule and test it with Preview/Rule Health before enabling it.

The Rule remains linked to the Token. Updating the Token later changes the value used by every eligible Rule that references it.

Understand Processing Order

Normal Rules run first in Rule processing order. When a Rule actually needs a Token-backed replacement, QCDR resolves that Token for the matched request/location. After Rule processing finishes, QCDR performs a separate pass for literal standalone Token placeholders in eligible output.

Rule Stop Processing can stop later Rules after a replacement, but it does not cancel the final standalone Token pass.

Targeting Still Belongs to the Token

A Token’s own page, extension, audience, schedule, IP, condition, plan, and dependency requirements still apply. Linking a Token to a broad Rule does not bypass the Token’s eligibility. If the Token cannot safely resolve, QCDR preserves the original Rule-matched content rather than applying an incomplete replacement.

When Centralization Helps

Use one Token when the value itself should have a single source of truth. Use direct placement for content you control and a Rule when you need to replace existing rendered output. This keeps the reusable value centralized without forcing every placement to use the same targeting method.
