Use Joomla Access Levels with QCLF Sections and Categories
QCLF uses Joomla viewing access levels as one layer of frontend visibility. Sections and Categories each store a Joomla Access Level, and a Category is not viewable unless its parent Section is also viewable.
Menu access controls who can reach the forum route, but it does not replace QCLF structure, publication, access-level, entitlement, or ACL checks inside the forum.
Visibility Is Layered
| Layer | Effect |
|---|---|
| Joomla menu access | Controls whether the visitor can reach the menu item through normal Joomla routing. |
| Current structure entitlement | The Section/Category must be within the structures usable under the current QCLF tier; sample rows are handled separately. |
| Published state | The Section and Category must be published. |
| Joomla Access Level | The user must be authorized for the Section access level and the Category access level. |
| Parent Section visibility | A Category fails if its parent Section cannot be viewed. |
| QCLF group ACL | An explicit applicable Deny for View Section or View Category can still refuse access. |
Configure Access Levels
- Open Sections & Categories.
- Edit the Section and select its Joomla access level.
- Edit each Category and select the intended Joomla access level.
- Save, then publish the rows from the structure board if they should be live.
- Test using accounts that actually belong to the target Joomla groups/view levels.
Parent Access Matters
A Category with Public access does not become visible through a parent Section that the visitor cannot view. QCLF evaluates the parent Section first. This prevents a permissive child access level from bypassing a restricted Section.
Access Level Is Not Action Permission
Being able to see a Category does not automatically allow creating Topics, replying, uploading attachments, moderating, or using live features. Those actions are evaluated separately through Category ACL, feature inheritance, state, sanctions, and entitlement.
Menu Access Is Not a Substitute
If the Joomla menu item is more restrictive than the forum content, users may never reach the component through that menu. If the menu item is broad, QCLF still filters Sections, Categories, and actions according to their own rules.
For reliable testing, use the exact non-Super-User groups used in production; a Super User can mask view-level and permission mistakes.
