Join and Participate in QCLF Live Chat

A visitor who can view a Live Chat Topic may be able to watch the conversation, but sending live Messages requires a signed-in participant who passes the Category Live Chat feature/action checks and has no applicable live-participation sanction.

QCLF keeps the session state and Message sequence authoritative on the server, while the browser polls for passive updates and repairs missed-message gaps after reconnects.

Join the Topic

  1. Open an accessible Live Chat Topic.
  2. If it is scheduled, remain in the lobby until the session becomes Live or the Host starts it.
  3. When Live, signed-in users with participation permission receive the one-line live composer.
  4. Send Messages and let the live stream continue updating without manually refreshing the whole Topic.

Participation Permission

The participant must be signed in, the resolved Live Chat feature must be enabled, and the Category must allow Participate in Live Chat. QCLF also rejects an active Live Chat/all-participation sanction in the applicable scope.

Users who can view but cannot participate receive a read-only explanation instead of a composer. Guests can read an accessible live conversation but cannot send live Messages.

Presence and Host Identity

QCLF tracks live-session participant presence with join/last-seen timestamps. The Topic Host is recorded separately and receives the Host role for live controls; ordinary participants do not gain Host/moderation actions merely by joining.

How Incoming Messages Arrive

The canonical frontend uses frequent passive snapshot polling while the page is visible and performs immediate recovery checks after focus, browser online, or visibility changes. Messages are sequence-ordered by the server.

When the browser submits a Message, it also reports its last known sequence. The response and follow-up snapshots can return missed Messages so short network gaps do not require the participant to reload manually.

Own vs Other Messages and Older History

The frontend marks the current user’s live Messages as their own and presents them on the opposite side of the stream from other participants. Older live history is loaded as the member scrolls toward the top, while a new-message indicator helps when the reader is no longer at the live edge.
