Host Watch Party Playback: Play, Pause, Seek, and Playlist Changes
In Host synchronized playback mode, the exact Watch Party Host owns the server-authoritative YouTube playback state. Host play, pause, meaningful seek, and playlist-item changes are published to QCLF so viewers can converge on the same item and position.
Independent playback is intentionally different: each viewer controls their own YouTube player and the synchronization endpoint rejects Host-sync updates for that mode.
Host Controls the Synchronized State
The sync service accepts only a live watch_party session in synchronized mode and only when the acting user ID matches the session Host. Valid playback states are playing, paused, and ended.
Control Synchronized Playback
- Open the live Watch Party as the exact Topic Host and confirm playback mode is Host synchronized.
- Use the YouTube player normally to play, pause, seek, or move to another playlist item.
- Confirm connected viewers converge on the Host item/state/position after the server publishes the newer synchronization version.
Play and Pause
When the Host player changes state, the frontend publishes the current playback state, position, and current YouTube item. QCLF stores the change time, Host/controller ID, and an incrementing version so viewers can reject stale state.
Seek
While the Host player is running, the frontend watches for a meaningful jump away from the expected progression and publishes a new authoritative position. It also sends a periodic Host heartbeat so late/reconnecting viewers have fresh state even when no explicit control was just clicked.
Playlist Item Changes
For a playlist, the current YouTube video ID is included as current_item_id. When the Host changes items, viewers receiving a newer authoritative version load/cue that item at the Host position instead of staying on the previous video.
Viewer Convergence
Viewers poll the separate Watch Party state feed and project a playing Host position forward from the server change timestamp. The player is corrected only when item/state/position materially disagrees, avoiding constant play/pause/seek calls that would cause visible YouTube control churn.
Important Boundary
A moderator is not promoted to synchronized playback controller by general moderation authority: the current server method requires the exact Host. Moderation controls such as Slow Mode, chat Lock, extension, or End are separate live-session permissions.
