How QCLF Smooths Watch Party Viewer Synchronization
QCLF deliberately avoids seeking or issuing play/pause commands on every one-second synchronization poll. It compares the real YouTube player with the projected Host state and corrects only when the difference is meaningful.
This reduces visible YouTube control churn while still reacting quickly to real Host seeks and playlist changes.
Current Drift Thresholds
- While playing, ordinary drift tolerance is 2.0 seconds.
- While paused, drift tolerance is 0.75 seconds.
- A drift of 4.0 seconds is treated as hard drift.
- A Host-state jump greater than 1.25 seconds from the previously projected path is treated as a meaningful Host jump.
- Normal playing-position corrections have an 8-second correction cooldown unless the Host jumped or drift is already hard.
Host Changes Are Published Promptly
The Host browser samples its own position every 500 ms. A jump greater than about one second or a playlist item change causes a new sync update immediately; a one-second Host heartbeat also keeps authoritative state fresh for late/reconnecting viewers.
Viewer Corrections Are Selective
If the item differs, QCLF loads/cues the authoritative item. On the same item it seeks only when drift exceeds the applicable tolerance and the correction conditions are met. It does not repeatedly call playVideo() or pauseVideo() when the actual player already agrees.
Buffering Is Not Treated as a Pause
When the Host state is playing, YouTube player state 3 (buffering) is accepted as moving toward playback. QCLF does not keep poking Play merely because the viewer is temporarily buffering.
Result
The one-second state feed stays responsive, but transport controls are touched only when item, state, or position materially disagrees. That is the core of QCLF’s viewer-smoothing strategy.
