Allow Subdirectories or Restrict a Connection to Root Files Only

This article shows how to configure whether users may descend into folders beneath the exact connection root; it explains the difference between root-only access and subdirectory access without weakening the top boundary.

How to do it

  1. Edit the Storage Connection.
  2. Keep the Exact root path set to the highest folder users should ever reach.
  3. Enable Allow access to subdirectories when users need to open folders below that root; leave it off when only root-level files should be exposed.
  4. Save and test with a normal Workspace user. The parent of the exact root must remain unreachable in both cases.
  5. Do not try to use the subdirectory option to broaden access above the root; QCSB normalizes and bounds every provider path to the configured root.

Verify the result

  • Test Connection succeeds.
  • The displayed/usable root is exactly the intended root and no parent folder is reachable.
  • A normal authorized user can perform only the operations intended for that connection/Workspace role.

Important limits and mistakes to avoid

  • Never broaden a connection root merely to work around a permission or provider error; fix the actual root/credential/hosting problem.

Troubleshooting

  • If the provider is unreachable, test the connection in Administrator before troubleshooting the Workspace UI.
  • Keep passwords, OAuth secrets/tokens, private keys, and unrestricted private paths out of public screenshots and support posts.
