Edit, Reorder, Publish, or Unpublish a Department

This article explains safe changes to department title/description/order/state and what existing tickets retain.

Where this fits in QC Support Ticket

Departments answer “who handles this ticket”; Categories answer “what kind of issue is this.” Agent Department scope controls ticket authorization, while Category scope controls which classifications are offered for a selected Department. Keeping those concepts separate makes routing predictable.

Primary location: Joomla Administrator → Components → QC Support Ticket → Settings → Organization and Ticket Setup.

How to do it

  1. Open Settings → Departments and edit the target Department.
  2. Change the title/description/ordering or publication state deliberately. A title change does not transfer existing tickets to another Department.
  3. If unpublishing, first review open/unassigned tickets and Agent coverage so active support work is not stranded operationally.
  4. Save, then verify the Department list order and test whether it appears—or correctly no longer appears—on New Ticket.

Important behavior and limits

  • Prefer unpublishing/retiring configuration first when you need to stop future use but preserve historical context; deletion should be deliberate.

Verify the result

  • The Department appears with the intended Published state and description in Settings.
  • A ticket submitted to that Department appears only to eligible Agents in that Department scope.

If it does not work as expected

  • If the Department is missing from intake, confirm it is Published and that the chosen Category/field scope is compatible.
  • If deletion is blocked, move or close active tickets/related records rather than forcing database deletion.

What existing tickets retain

Changing the Department title, description, ordering or Published state does not rewrite the Department stored on historical tickets. Unpublishing is therefore the safer choice when the team should stop accepting new work into that Department but old tickets still need to remain understandable. Before unpublishing a live Department, identify open or unassigned tickets and decide who will finish them.
