How QCUL Copies and Isolates the Live Site

QCUL copies production into a separate directory and database-table prefix, then rewrites and quarantines the clone so it behaves as a private test environment rather than a second live site.

File isolation

A run-specific laboratory directory under the QCUL lab parent receives production files in bounded batches. QCUL excludes cache, administrator/cache, tmp, logs, QCUL private storage, the laboratory parent, and existing lab roots so the clone does not recursively copy temporary or private QCUL artifacts.

Database isolation

Joomla-prefixed production tables are copied to a unique run-specific prefix. The laboratory configuration points to that prefix, so update installation changes the copied database rather than production.

Configuration isolation

  • New Joomla secret/cookie path settings separate authentication state.
  • Mail delivery is disabled.
  • Offline state is disabled for the lab copy so review access works behind the private gate.
  • Robots/noindex controls are applied.
  • The lab runtime/marker establishes identity and blocks production-control operations from inside the clone.

Not a sanitized dataset

Because the lab is production-derived, copied content may contain real sensitive data. Isolation controls access and side effects; it does not promise generalized anonymization.

Safety check before update testing

Before relying on How QCUL Copies and Isolates the Live Site, confirm the private copy still shows laboratory identity, its access gate works, and ordinary browsing stays inside the lab rather than silently using production. The cloned site contains production-derived data, so a laboratory that is not demonstrably isolated should be repaired or refreshed before any update rehearsal.
