Running Joomla Scheduled Tasks Reliably with Server Cron

Server cron is the most predictable way to ensure Joomla’s Scheduled Tasks run even when frontend traffic is low, which matters for QCUL expiry/orphan/safety maintenance.

Step-by-step procedure

  1. In Joomla Administrator, open System → Scheduled Tasks.
  2. Confirm Joomla Scheduled Tasks are available and the QCUL tasks are present.
  3. For unattended execution, configure your hosting/server cron to invoke Joomla’s Scheduled Tasks CLI on a reliable cadence appropriate to your site.
  4. Run/test the scheduler according to Joomla/hosting guidance and confirm task Last Execution/Next Execution values advance.
  5. Do not create a cron that calls QCUL production-push actions; the QCUL operational tasks only perform cleanup/orphan/safety maintenance.

Choose an appropriate cadence

Your server cron should invoke Joomla’s normal Scheduler CLI frequently enough that an hourly cleanup task is not delayed for many hours. Joomla itself decides which due tasks execute; do not create separate cron commands that bypass QCUL/Joomla state by calling internal production actions directly.

Scheduled-task verification

After changing or repairing Running Joomla Scheduled Tasks Reliably with Server Cron, verify the canonical task row in System → Scheduled Tasks: enabled/disabled state, Last Execution, Next Execution, and Last Exit Code. Registration alone does not prove the maintenance routine runs; Joomla Scheduler still needs Lazy Scheduler or server cron to trigger due work.
